Dr. Kumar Ambarish Chanchal is a distinguished Indian classical vocalist rooted in the Kirana Gharana tradition. He is currently serving as an Associate Professor in the Department of Vocal Music at the Faculty of Performing Arts, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, a position he has held since 2006. Known for his versatility, Dr. Chanchal has mastered various forms of Hindustani music including classical, semi-classical, and devotional styles such as Bhajan and Thumri.
Dr. Chanchal began his musical training under Guru Sri R.V. Kavimandan in Varanasi and later continued under the tutelage of Pandit Madhav Guni, a prominent figure of the Kirana Gharana. His artistic journey also includes a valuable association with the legendary vocalist Smt. Gangubai Hangal during his research years, which deeply influenced his understanding and performance style.
Throughout his career, Dr. Chanchal has performed at prestigious platforms across India and abroad. His major concerts include appearances at the Sai Gandharva Sammelan in Kundgol, Bhaskar Rao Nritya & Sangeet Sammelan in Chandigarh, Ganga Mahotsav in Varanasi, and Subah-e-Banaras, among many others. His international engagements include lectures and performances in Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Thailand, UAE, and Vietnam, reflecting his growing global recognition.
Dr. Chanchal has been honored with numerous awards including the Fellow Award (FMMAYP) Mauritius 2025, the Sangeet Shiromani Samman, D.Litt. (Honorary) from The American University (USA, 2024), and the International Education Excellence Award in Vietnam. His accolades also include regional honors such as the Purvanchal Ratna and Sangeet Ratnakar Samman. He has been actively involved with cultural organizations like Sanskar Bharti, serving in various leadership roles at both the city and state levels.
In addition to his performance career, Dr. Chanchal has contributed significantly to music scholarship. He has authored two books—Gangubai Hungal ka Sangeetik Yogdan and Sangeet Vithika—and has published over 35 research papers in esteemed national and international journals. His contributions also extend to music direction, having composed devotional and classical works including Rudra Mantra, Ganga Stuti, Hanuman Chalisa, and more.
Dr. Chanchal continues to inspire students and audiences through his performances, scholarship, and dedication to the preservation and evolution of Hindustani classical music.
